Do you know somebody who hates going to the dentist? At Comfort Dental Centre Buderim we have certainly met and successfully treated more than our share.
A study by the American Association of Endodontists showed that nearly 80 of those surveyed have some fear of the dentist.
A Wall Street Journal article reports that almost 25 percent of those surveyed are so fearful, they avoid their dental check-ups unless they’re in pain.
Some people are afraid of the sound of the drill, while some are afraid of pain. Some people dislike the lack of control they feel in the chair, and others feel like their personal space is being invaded. Some people don’t want to go to the dentist because they’re afraid the current condition of their teeth will lead to a lecture about not brushing or flossing their teeth properly.
Unfortunately, the longer a dental visit is delayed, the more serious and costly the problems are to fix. Plaque can cause gum disease and cavities. If the decay reaches the nerve of the tooth, then you will need a root canal and a crown. In advanced gum disease, bacteria destroy the bone supporting your teeth, causing your teeth to become loose and in possible need of extraction. Plus, new studies link gum disease with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes.
It is in your interest to overcome your dental anxiety, and in order to help you, Comfort Dental Centre is sharing the following information.
Dealing with Dental Anxiety
The good news is there are some personal strategies you can adopt to decrease your anxiety:
Understand Your Dentist <-> Your Dentist Understand You. When scheduling your first visit, communicate your fears and concerns. Our staff will walk you through what you can expect during your visit, to reduce your fear of the “unknown”.
Rest Up. Get a good night’s sleep before your appointment and avoid caffeine before your visit.
Pay Attention to Scheduling. Try to schedule your appointment in the morning, so that you don’t start questioning the procedure and worrying about your visit later in the day.
Bring a Friend. Having someone you trust by your side can help you to make decisions and calm you during your visit. If you need reassurance, they will be there for you!
Seek Distraction. If you are not concentrating on your treatment, you are less likely to feel anxiety. So, distract yourself! Listen to music during treatment. Read magazines, books, or even draw in a colouring-book while you wait for your appointment.
Breathe! Practice controlled breathing by taking a big breath in through your nose, holding it, and letting it out slowly. This can help you to relax your muscles and slow your heartbeat.
Set things up in advance. If you are anxious, treatments will be conducted at your pace with time for a “breather,” to take a drink of water or to just relax and stretch a bit.
Schedule Regular Dental Check-Ups. This seems unlikely since it means more time in the chair.
But frequent visits will help you to get to know and trust our staff, and usually reduce the number of treatments you need. Comfort Dental Centre will catch problems early, avoiding more complicated and expensive procedures at a later date.
Discuss Sedation Options. If you still can’t bring yourself to visit us, talk to us about available sedatives, numbing agents, or prescriptions that may or may not be appropriate for you to ease your anxiety.
