Dental Braces

Home » Treatments » Dental Braces

If you have crooked teeth or a misaligned bite, there is a variety of treatments that can help straighten teeth and bite, and these treatments include braces and retainers. Many dentists perform basic alignment and orthodontics, but orthodontists specialise in correcting dental irregularities.

If you are a good candidate for braces, your dentist will ask questions about your health, conduct an examination, take impressions of your teeth, take images of your face and teeth, and order X-rays of the mouth and head. An appropriate treatment plan is tailored based on the analysis from the gathered data.

In many cases, a removable retainer will be all that’s needed. In rare cases, surgery may be required. In most cases, however, braces are all that is necessary.

Dental braces offer corrective treatment for:

Correct alignment of your teeth and bite may improve not only your teeth’s appearance but also your mouth’s health and the way you bite, chew, and speak.

The Dental Braces Procedure

The application of braces moves the teeth as an outcome of pressure on the teeth.

The teeth move when the archwire applies pressure on the brackets and teeth. Springs or rubber bands are sometimes used to put more force in the desired direction.

Braces have constant pressure, which moves teeth into the desired positions. This procedure loosens the tooth, after which new bone grows in to support the tooth in its new position.

This is called bone remodeling. Bone remodeling is a process that makes bones stronger as a reaction to sustained load-bearing activity and weaker in the absence of supporting a load.

Our bones are made of cells called osteoclasts and osteoblasts.

Two kinds of bone resorption are possible: direct resorption, which begins from the lining cells of the alveolar bone, and indirect or retrograde resorption that takes place when the periodontal ligament has been subjected to an extreme amount and duration of compressive stress.

Another important factor related to the movement of the tooth is a bone deposition. Bone deposition takes place in the distracted periodontal ligament.

Without bone deposition, the tooth loosens, and voids will occur distal to the direction of tooth movement.

There are traditionally four (4) basic elements used in braces:

How to Take Care of Braces

To decrease the risk of damaging your teeth and dental braces:

Limit your intake of sugary, starchy, and hard foods and beverages, which can contribute to the formation of plaque and tooth decay.

Brush gently, preferably soon after every meal, using a fluoride toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush. If you can’t brush your teeth after eating, gargle with water.

Rinse thoroughly to get rid of all food particles. Check in the mirror to make sure your teeth are clean.

Use a fluoride mouthrinse if recommended by your Buderim dentist or orthodontist.

Floss between braces and underwires with a floss threader. Your orthodontist may recommend a small flexible toothbrush to clean between braces and wires.
